Mediation is a process in which separating couples meet with an independent person (a trained Mediator) to assist them in making arrangements for their future, to discuss their situation and assist them in coming to an agreement, where possible, in respect of matters relating to the breakdown of their relationship, financial matters or matters relating to the children.
Mediation is not marriage counselling or legal advice or legal representation. Each party is advised to consider seeking independent legal advice during the process of mediation.
The process is confidential, although allegations of child abuse may be disclosed to the local Social Services Department and financial information between the parties is share openly. Participants are encouraged to consider the welfare, wishes and feelings of any children.
Mediation can always be terminated if any participant does not wish to continue at anytime.
